Nocturno: fantasmas de mar en puerto

Despitethe clashing portrayal of the landscapes, it’s hard not to link the Galician director Álvaro Fernández-Pulpeiro’s first feature film, Nocturno: fantasmas de mar en puerto, with its closest predecessor in time, the 2015 short film Sol mihi siempre lucet. If in the latter the portrait’s background was the somnolent west Texan plains, in the former the place is taken by the dark waters of Montevideo’s dock. The ethereal, fleeting moments of the Aurora and the Twilight, the lost hours of a ship’s crew waiting for the tide’s movement and their return to the ocean. Both are spaces of transit, moments lost in a time that given its nature, are filled with lyricism: the lyrics of the ephemeral, the short-lived, of what is destined to not be.
