War leads to more than just loss of life and the psychological trauma of those directly involved. The civilians in a given area must also ensure a suitable environment for the military. This is why there are still 96 districts in South Korea that were established in the 1950s to satisfy the sexual needs of American soldiers. In one of the abandoned streets of South Korea, inviting neon lights still glow, flickering fluorescent lights draw attention to the contents of display windows, and the rhythmic click-clack of high heels resounds through the air. Everything seems calm and quiet, without any hint that something might be wrong. However, in 1992, a young prostitute was brutally murdered here by a soldier. Those are the echoes of her high heels that one continues to hear today. The same applies to the sexual violence against women, which is par for the day. Neither the police nor the law are of any help. However, anyone who looks the dead young woman into her eyes must ask: How much longer will the world remain indifferent? (One World)
