Dive into a secret, third-world shadow industry of online content moderation. Here we meet five “digital scavengers,” a handful of thousands of people outsourced from Silicon Valley whose job is to delete “inappropriate” content off of the internet. In a parallel struggle, we meet people around the globe whose lives are dramatically affected by online censorship. A typical “cleaner” must observe and rate thousands of intense images every day, from war zone photography to pornography, leading to lasting psychological impacts. Its sophisticated attractive form conceals that, in terms of content, the film is - how to diplomatically put it - somewhat empty. If you try to summarize at the end what you have learned, I think the list will be very brief. The Cleaners sells banalities that must be clear to a reasonable and at least somewhat knowledgeable viewer before watching it. I have been pondering a lot about how to review The Cleaners. In the end, for its excellent camera work and portrayals of social contrasts in Filipino society, I will lean toward a weak three-star rating. What really bothers me is the attempt at emotional manipulation, which I clearly sensed in a number of scenes, for example, when the camera lingers for too long on the face of a worker describing the beheading of people in videos by jihadists. Here, it is clear that such scenes serve no other purpose than to attract attention and sell the documentary to the widest audience possible and generate buzz in the media. Overall impression: 50%.
