Akcja filmu rozgrywa się w Kalifornii. Adelaide Wilson (Lupita Nyong'o) wraz z mężem (Winston Duke) i dziećmi przyjeżdża do letniego domku, aby znaleźć wytchnienie. Ścigana przez niewyjaśnione i nierozwiązane traumy z przeszłości oraz dziwaczne zbiegi okoliczności, Adelaide czuje, że paranoja, w której się znalazła, narasta z niepohamowaną siłą. Kobieta zaczyna obawiać się o swoich bliskich. Po relaksującym dniu na plaży, z rodziną i przyjaciółmi (Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker), Adelaide wraca do domu.
