W czasach, kiedy tysiące rodzin szuka swej Ziemi Obiecanej w Ameryce, rodzina McCourtów wybiera drogę powrotną – do Irlandii, do Limerick, gdzie wiecznie pada deszcz. Życie tu jest jeszcze trudniejsze, ale przynajmniej Angela McCourt, matka gromadki dzieci, z których wielu nie dane będzie przeżyć kilku nawet lat, ma z kim porozmawiać. Katolicka rodzina wybaczyła jej, że wyszła za protestanta i pijaka, matka i siostra wspierają ją jak mogą, choć czasem trzeba prosić o pomoc organizację dobroczynną. Zwłaszcza, że Malachy, ojciec rodziny nie potrafi jej utrzymać, a po kilku latach ostatecznie ja opuszcza. Losy rodziny McCourtów i zarazem swoje życie opisuje najstarszy syn Angeli, Frank. Dom naprzeciw szaletu, ubogi pokoik, szkolne upokorzenia, pierwsza komunia, pierwsza praca, pierwszy łyk piwa, pierwsza miłość. I w końcu pierwsza dojrzała decyzja, by kiedyś opuścić Limerick i znów poszukać szczęścia za oceanem. (ITI)
