Lata 20. XX w. Zafascynowany kinem 20-letni milioner, Howard Hughes, postanawia wyreżyserować film. Monumentalna produkcja ciągnie się latami, pochłaniając miliony dolarów. Jednak wysiłek się opłaca: Aniołowie piekieł odnoszą sukces. Howard z dnia na dzień staje się gwiazdą, znajduje grono wielbicielek. Przez kilka lat jego towarzyszką jest Katharine Hepburn.
