Seeking both power and glory, the French fleet led by Bonaparte, invades Egypt in 1798, and takes first Alexandria and then Cairo. One of Bonaparte's generals, Caffarelli, a scientist and a humanist, discovers Egyptian civilization and spirit. He makes friends with two brothers. Aly and Yehia, who had taken refuge in the capital, are fascinated with this learned and original character. While the resistance fighters set against the bloody oppression, Caffarelli, leaving behind him all warlike concerns, rebels himself against Bonaparte and his destructive conquests. angielski I wouldn’t guess that Egypt would produce an epic period movie with a lot of mass scenes, let alone Egypt during the 1980s’. Youssef Chahine knew very well what he wanted to produce. And taking into consideration that the year was 1985 I have to say that it is quite a nice piece. The funny thing is, of course, that the Egyptians act as the most proud nation of them all and even local kid heroes are able to kick Napoleon’s butt. Nevertheless I’m not French so it doesn’t offend me and I don’t know the historical facts of Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt well enough to tell what was true and what was not. The nationalism was extreme in this movie but from the film-making point of view it wasn’t bad at all. ()
