In Hella Joof’s debut film (where Lisa Nilsson performs the title song), Jacob (Mads Mikkelsen) proposes to Jörgen (Troels Lyby) on his birthday, after many years together. But already during the same evening he sees Jörgen’s wasted sister-in-law Caroline over the toilet seat with a glass of red wine, and the encounter awakens odd feelings in Jacob. Suddenly life is turned upside down, and Jacob does not know what to do with all these feelings. Two years after his breakthrough in Bleeder, Mads Mikkelsen shows he is ready to present a charming portrayal of the confused man in love at the heart of this entertaining triangle drama. Shake It is an amusing, sincere and incredibly light rendering of dramatic relationship tangles, shrouded in a surprisingly not annoying or intrusive sexual liberality. It’s another one of those very nice Scandinavian movies that astonish me with how much passion and raw emotion are hidden behind the seemingly cool exterior of those “cold” people. And Mads Mikkelsen is a truly excellent actor, able to convey any kind of emotion in a believable manner.
