Lena jest w siódmym miesiącu ciąży i jest zdecydowana sprzedać noworodka. Ermanno zgadza się udawać jego ojca. Wujek chłopaka, Fabio, kupi od nich dziecko, którego ze swoją żoną Bianką nie mogą mieć. Fałszywa adopcja między krewnymi to luka prawna – we Włoszech bycie surogatką jest zabronione. W tym świecie pieniądz jest jedyną wartością, tylko on ma znaczenie. Ermanno i Lena to dwoje nieznajomych, udających na zewnątrz parę i żyjących wspólnie do rozwiązania. Przyzwyczajeni myśleć tylko o sobie, nieustannie walczą. Sole is a minimalist ode to loss and discovery, in the modest 4:3 format, which can accommodate only the essential elements for an intimate study of two absolutely different young people. There is practically no music, and dialogue is kept to a minimum. The foundation of Sironi’s narrative is examination of who these two characters are inside, though at first glance they are aloof slackers with no attachment to any sort of meaningful life, what they experience in certain situations and how it will affect them. How do a motorcycle thief who spends his free time in a gambling den and a girl capable of selling her unborn child get along with each other when they move in together and how do they deal with the initial care of the child? Sironi fills the photographic imagery of the events with a feel for human psychology. He doesn’t criticise anyone, but he does let them regret their mistakes. Awareness and awakening are not free.
