This historical adventure story is set in 1611 just after the Passau invasion of Bohemia. The main heroine, twelve-year-old Magdalena, accidentally witnesses a cruel and merciless battle between Passau mercenaries and their Czech pursuers. At this time she meets the wandering musician Matouš Psík. Their friendship helps them overcome all dangers, caused in no small extent by a miraculous bottle - a bottle that can grant its owner one wish, but which must then be sold at half the price than which it was purchased, otherwise its holder is doomed to Hell... angielski Quite a dark and raw period film with a touch of something wannabe supernatural. But from today’s perspective, I wouldn’t consider it supernatural, because at that time even a fart underwater counted as such. To my great surprise, I missed perhaps only one thing to consider this movie perfect. It was a bit pity that the creators decided to portray the Middle Ages so faithfully that sometimes I had difficulties with understanding the actors. They were talking in various languages, and their Czech sometimes sounded as if they were trying to talk with their mouths full. And the girl who played Michaela Kudláčková didn’t have to cry as much. I could only catch her every other word. Anyhow, I didn’t expect a movie like this to be made in Czechoslovakia – a solidly made mediaeval story shot in beautiful locations. I wish there were more films like this, because I keep telling myself that the Czech Republic was made for such stories. I just don’t know which director would be up to such task. ()

angielski The Last One Will Fall to Hell is a reminder of the times when the Barrandov film studio functioned as a fully-fledged film studio with often quite ambitious genre production, thanks to state subsidies. Despite the fact that for me there is a bit of nostalgia in my relationship with the film, it withstands strict standards placed on period genre films. These projects have never been cheap, and this doesn't look cheap either. Let's be honest, how many comparable genre productions have been created in the Czech Republic since the disintegration of production groups and the privatization of Barrandov? It's quite a dark and adventurous spectacle from the time just before the Thirty Years' War with the talented Michaela Kudláčková in the lead role. Overall impression: 80%. ()
