The Last Waltz

Martin Scorsese masterfully presents a half documentary of the last concert of the legendary rock band The Band and half documentary insight into the personalities of its members, who give entertaining and humorous interviews on camera. And in addition, there is a whole host of star musical guests. I have to say that watching the restored version in the space of a cinema with good sound was a really immersive experience, and I almost felt like a participant of that legendary concert. The excellent music is complemented by imaginative camera shots by the cinematographic elite of the 1970s (Michael Chapman, David Myers, László Kovács, Vilmos Zsigmond...). For me, it was literally a fully experienced film screening and a perfect example of how a viewer can be completely drawn into a work. [KVIFF 2022] (10.07.2022)

Even though I don't know these songs, even though I have heard of The Band for the first time, the documentary/concert recording at least partially conveys the great atmosphere to the viewer, just as the band's atmosphere at the time of their breakup is also conveyed. In terms of context, the viewer learns enough to understand the significance of the band, as well as the necessity of their break-up. Martin Scorsese has shown himself to be a great observer and has the ability to capture significant moments, both externally and internally. Great footage of The Band's farewell concert that is "just" a top-notch capture of the musical experience rather than a documentary in the true sense of the word. Scorsese's off-stage interviews don't go into any extra depth, you learn a few moderately funny facts and anecdotes from the 60s that peaceably fill in the moments between musical performances. Anyway, seeing it on the big screen in Karlovy Vary was a treat. [80%] (01.07.2022)
