Film jest próbą rekonstrukcji wydarzeń, które w 1839 roku zapoczątkował bunt Murzynów na pokładzie hiszpańskiego statku handlarzy niewolników "La Amistad". Więźniowie uwolnili się, zabijając większość załogi. Dwóch ocalonych marynarzy miało pomóc im wrócić do Afryki. Tymczasem Hiszpanie poprowadzili statek do Ameryki. Murzyni zostali aresztowani i postawieni przed sądem. Ich rzecznikami stają się zwolennicy zniesienia niewolnictwa, którzy opłacają obrońcę. Rozprawa wyjaśnia kwestie pochodzenia Murzynów i trasy, jaką przebyli w drodze z Afryki. (CBS Europa)
