Birthday fills us in on how it was with Sadako. This plot level has a lot going for it as it presents her as a fragile and powerful being who can also love strongly. Especially the ending, when her fate is sealed, is very powerful. As a whole, however, the film is too drawn out and held back by supporting motifs (the character of Sadako’s boss), which causes the primary level to become “blurred”. If the screenplay had been more concise and the runtime shorter, this could have been great.
