Biografia

Founder of the magazine ‘La Gazzette du Cinéma’, collaborator of ‘Arts’ and chief editor during the best period of ‘Cahiers du Cinéma’, he debuted as film director in 1960 with Paris Belongs To Us. His filmography combines unique literary adaptations, such as The Nun (1966), Mad Love (1968) or Wuthering Heights (1985), and works as personal as Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974), Love on the Ground (1984) or The Beautiful Troublemaker (1991). In 1991 he was awarded the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Festival for his entire career, and in 2001 he won the Special Jury Prize at Seminci with Who Knows?. His filmography also includes works such as The Story of Marie and Julien (2003), The Duchess of Langeais (2007) and Around a Small Mountain (2009).
