Jody Lee Lipes

An Independent Spirit Award-nominated director of photography, Jody Lee Lipes was selected as one of Variety's 10 Cinematographers to Watch in 2011. Lipes' cinematography credits include Martha Marcy May Marlene, Tiny Furniture and Afterschool.

Lipes' directing credits include Magnolia Pictures' Ballet 422, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014. The film follows choreographer Justin Peck from first rehearsal to world premiere as he creates a new work for New York City Ballet. Additionally, Lipes has directed HBO's Girls, which won a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series—Comedy or Musical in 2013; PBS' NY Export: Opus Jazz, a scripted on-location Jerome Robbins dance film, which won the Emerging Visions Audience Award at the 2010 SXSW Film Festival; the vérité artist documentary Brock Enright: Good Times Will Never Be the Same, which premiered at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival; and commercials for Apple and the New York City Ballet.

In 2012, Lipes' first screenplay Confederacy was selected for the Sundance Institute's Directors and Screenwriters Lab, an Indian Paintbrush Grant and both a MacDowell Fellowship and a Yaddo Fellowship.

As a director of photography, Lipes has worked with commercial and music video collaborators, such as Mark Romanek and Jay Z.
