Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

angielski Everything Tom Cruise has his fingers in is entertaining and most of what Christopher McQuarrie has his fingers in is not. At least that is my first impression after watching MI7. In Tom's case, you can see extreme commitment, diligence, and an effort to do everything to entertain the viewer, not to mention the stunts, including the now legendary cliff jump. But the film is not fun in terms of content. A plot like from the 1990s, dialogue wadding and most of the characters are poorly drawn and therefore emotionally flat, including the main big villain, whose fateful moment in history we learn about through a five-second flashback, which is repeated about three times in the course of the film. The extremely swollen running time is hard to justify with the feeling of a film like Tomorrow Never Dies. There is some physical action, but Cruise is hardly a match for Daniel Craig or Chris Hemsworth, he doesn't have the age and especially the physical parameters. The much-discussed train finale is satisfying, but certainly not the best MI has ever offered. The sixth film, which is a similarly styled formal spy romp, is better. And those thunderous "Dar Knight" synths like something out of Hans Zimmer's workshop help just a little and rip off a lot.

Indiana Jones i artefakt przeznaczenia (2023)

angielski Not great, not terrible. At the start, when we flashback to World War II and a Wehrmacht officer shines a flashlight in the face of a clearly digital Indy, who squints his eyes everywhere but where he's supposed to, it's a bit scary, but thankfully after a few minutes the train (literally) does slowly move forward and we get a few jokes, solid action and imaginative locations. The dogged effort to honor the unique retro-adventure concept of the saga is evident at every turn, but not always entirely necessary or appropriate. Hats off to Ford, who pulls off some incredible stunts for an octogenarian. On the other hand, I believe this film will probably flop in theaters even if Indy stands on its head. Because it's too uninteresting for the young generation, with an uninteresting, generic pulled out of thin air, and the older viewers would rather watch The Last Crusade, which doesn't need try to go back to its roots, because it’s right there.

The Last of Us - Do ostatnich dni (2023) (odcinek)

angielski A unique bromance in a world of ruin and suffering. Fragile, touching and unapologetic. In the first minutes it doesn't look like that at all, but gradually the two partners win you over bit by bit – unless are a bigot looking for something that isn't there. Everything important about a meaningful relationship of any gender is simply here.

The Last of Us - Zarażeni (2023) (odcinek)

angielski A dystopian journey through a desolate world without rules, where every second is about survival. An uncompromising survival with great atmosphere, tension and last but not least, the way the creators play with the visuals in detail. The content of the whole doesn't move almost at all, but I understand that this post-apocalyptic beauty ride might be the main asset of the game, so they wanted to give it to the movie viewer in a good amount

The Last of Us - Gdy zgubisz się w ciemności (2023) (odcinek)

angielski As an absolute layman who never played the famous game, I am very satisfied. The apocalypse is dosed gradually through an authentic 20-minute opening with a bare minimum of annoyingly shocking or scary moments, and rather relies on raw authenticity and stellar first person shots, which especially from the car look absolutely excellent. The whole is more in the spirit of minimalism and tension, rather than spectacular scenes like in World War Z. Once the plot moves to the present, it's a little less cohesive and loses a bit of pace, plus the destroyed city doesn’t look that cool because there's no budget to have it look cool. But the main characters are fine and the storyline is interesting at the very least.

Doktor Żywago (1965)

angielski I can't help comparing this film to The English Patient. It’s similarly conceived, with almost identically beautiful footage of nature and a great love story with a not so idyllic happy ending. But David Lean is a generation apart from Anthony Minghella, and this is reflected in the long takes, the starched emotions and, above all, the monstrous running time, which is quite often inexcusable. Is not that Doctor Zhivago isn’t pompous, it’s expensively produced, well-directed, and on top of that a fairly meticulous depiction of the turbulent history of early 20th century Russia. But if it was cut down by half an hour of camera pans and overlong facial expressions, it would be much more enjoyable for the viewer.

Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)

angielski Art above entertainment. Cyrano has excellent leading actors (especially Gérard Depardieu), exquisitely crafted dialogue lyrics and first-rate make-up. On the other hand, it has the classic problems of film adaptations of theatre plays: cardboard sets, deliberate overacting in basically all supporting roles and a bland screenplay. Theatre plays are hard to adapt, like video games, and few of them work out well. This one is bearable, but I wouldn't consider it an outright hit.

Dungeons & Dragons: Złodziejski honor (2023)

angielski A flat storyline with a variation of the same plot seen hundreds of times, but with an excellent group of likeable characters and a truly amazing villain. The whole thing is dynamic, funny with some great scenes (the fat dragon) and a charismatic lead in Chris Pine. It's obvious that it was made by someone who has a feel for the material and a respect for fantasy. The potential for a sequel or saga is there, but next time it should be either darker or more original.

Yellowstone - Season 2 (2019) (seria)

angielski A tad better than Season 1. This season does a good job developing all the key characters. It doesn’t stand still or stagger, we get more and more under the skin of the main characters, sometimes the creators allow it more and sometimes less. But when the key conversations, decisions and actually touching moments come, it's clear that the writers and casting didn't fail. In addition, this season was peppered with excellent neo-cowboy mobsters and the Beck brothers, who added the appropriate flavour to the already very interesting mosaic of individualism and desire for power.

Yellowstone - Grzechy ojca (2019) (odcinek)

angielski A worthy finale without an overly dramatic or perhaps even epic climax, but with a decent and wholesome conclusion to the second chapter, where some passages were riveting, though most "merely" above average. I was expecting a harsher dealing with the Becks.
