Pearl Harbor (2001)
It's interesting how some directors make money out of historical events/tragedies. First, it was Titanic, now Pearl Harbor. What's next? A romantic drama set in Auschwitz?
Na skraju lasu (1976)
Czech comedy at its best, along with Marecek, Pass Me the Pen! A film from 1976 that still works perfectly. Time hasn’t taken its toll on its relevance or humor.
Mareczku, podaj mi pióro! (1976)
Doomsday (2008)
Doomsday offers absolutely nothing new in the post-apocalyptic genre, but it’s still entertaining. I especially appreciated Rhona Mitra's hilarious hi-tech eye. It was interesting to see the effects of the virus on the Scottish population – turning them back into savage Picts with cannibalistic tendencies. No wonder they have always been perceived as a threat by the English. A fun action movie.
Żołnierze kosmosu (1997)
One of the best anti-war films ever as far as I’m concerned. Shiny happy people brainwashed by propaganda that even Goebbels would envy fight to the last limb against sneaky repulsive bugs. The film's main positives definitely include the direction, excellent costumes whose legacy is crystal clear, the endless enthusiasm of all the soldiers, the comedic propaganda shots with chilling subtext, and the great supporting characters of Clancy Brown and Michael Ironside. Verhoeven failed to disappoint me again.
Mad Max: Pod Kopułą Gromu (1985)
As much as I was impressed by the second installment, the third one was underwhelming, and it wasn’t Tina Turner's fault. Too many kids and shamefully little action and suspense. The Road Warrior certainly deserved a much better follow-up.
Mad Max 2 - Wojownik szos (1981)
The Road Warrior is a film I have seen many times and still enjoy. An action-packed post-apocalyptic blast and one of the top 5 action films of my childhood up there with RoboCop, Terminator, Alien, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Among other things, the film contains great costumes and technology, but above all, it manages to draw me into the plot and doesn’t let go for a second.
Mad Max (1979)
The budget was obviously too low, so the writer probably didn't get paid enough either. The film didn't really impress me with anything. In some low-budget films, the filmmakers can make up for the lack of funding with enthusiasm, which didn't happen in Mad Max. I’m giving it one star because it precedes the great second installment.
Creed. Narodziny legendy (2015)
Terrible! I found the main "hero" totally unrelatable from start to finish. I still remember enjoying Rocky all those years ago. Back in the day, these films featured a charismatic main character and his evil counterpart. Creed lacks both. Plus, Rocky gets also attacked by cancer, which I take as a last-ditch attempt to stir at least some emotion in the viewer. And it worked – it stirred total disgust in me. Unfortunately, Rocky gets talked into treatment by the totally uncharismatic Adonis (WTF?), so maybe I'll get to see the next installment entitled Rocky: The Wheelchair. Yaaay!!!
Mad Max: Na drodze gniewu (2015)
I was apprehensive about the new Max. I thought it would be just another remake of the already seen. Who would have thought? A brand-new story that races forward just like all the machines it features. It grabbed me right from the start and didn’t let go until the end. An absolutely captivating film! I would be very interested to know how many limbs Charlize Theron would have to lose to stop being sexy (except maybe for Monster, where she wasn’t even missing any body parts).
