Priključenija Šerloka Cholmsa i doktora Vatsona: Sokrovišča Agry (1983) (film telewizyjny)

angielski After the slightly weaker The Hound of the Baskervilles (and The Tiger Hunt), there is once again a pleasant episode that all the while benefits from the friendship of Holmes and Watson, from the humor and from the mysterious plot. I especially liked the beginning of the second part - the dreamy memory of Irena Adlerová, which was actually the most important thing from A Scandal in Bohemia summarized in half an hour. I was moved by the ending.

Fantastyczne zwierzęta i jak je znaleźć (2016)

angielski I simply can't write about this film other than as a huge pleasure. It gets everything right, and if I reach for the comparison that is directly offered, the magical duel between the fantastic Mlok Scamander and the bland Doctor Strange has a clear winner. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them does not need a boring introduction to introduce us to the main characters (although they are relatively unknown), because they are all experienced magic people and we get to know on the fly what they can or cannot do. They don't even need awkward jokes behind every scene, although there is no shortage of humor. Of course, they have the advantage of being set in a familiar world, but they don't settle for that and expand that world very nicely with new plots, characters and little things like "Muggles in England, non-wizards in the USA". It's all understandable, whether you know Harry Potter or not, and enhanced (how else?) by a fantastic cast led by the quirky Eddie Redmayne, the delightful Katherine Waterston and the brilliant romantic comic duo of Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol.

Złota dama (2015)

angielski Too bad it's such a standard and unsurprising film (even for those who don't know anything about the real story), because the subject matter and cast are more than enticing and easy to watch. Also, I'm not sure if the filmmakers wanted the viewer to think about whether or not it was even right for the paintings to leave Austria.

Nejsem gladiátor (1972) (program)

angielski The pop face of Václav Neckář with everything that it encompasses - not when we were waiting for his first truly adult album “Tomu, kdo nás má rád" for two years, “Planetárium" for six years and eleven years for “Příběhy, písně a balady". But that doesn't mean this is bad. The first ten minutes are taken up by a very wacky and even parodic mixture of the most famous songs, which were already so outdated in 1972 that Neckář and Bacily simply had to make fun of them (they also liked to play this mixture live, as the recording on the album “Doktor Dam Di Dam" and his Bacily proves), but then, starting with the then fresh hit “Světská sláva, polní tráva", and the regular songs and regular music videos come next. In between there is one bit of buffoonery, namely “Srdce v rytmu operety", which is, however, more bearable than the introduction and in which Neckář's acting talent also shines through.

Ze soboty na neděli (1931)

angielski A simple story in a captivating presentation that smells of the enchantment of sound and the opportunity to play around with combining it with images and filming in general. It's a terrible cliché, but this film really barely aged and is perhaps paradoxically more modern than many of those made in the years and decades that followed. Amazing music by Jaroslav Ježek.

O věcech nadpřirozených (1958)

angielski Three amazing stories, each unique in its own way, with a different mood and always with an excellent cast and a striking point. It's hard to say which one I liked the most, but if I had to choose, perhaps the third one about the resurrected grandfather, who, in a 100% suspenseful noir atmosphere, chases Miloš Kopecký, who resurrected him with a "great skid".

Osobliwy dom pani Peregrine (2016)

angielski It's with a heavy heart that I rate as I do, because Danny Elfman's score is about the last thing Tim Burton's new film lacks. It's nice to look at, I was very pleased to see Eva Green finally playing something a little different, and the kids are also pleasantly weird, but it's SO boring, confusing towards the end, and the action is there just because, and so the special effects guys can make money... I haven't read the book, but I still want to read it – right now because I just believe it will be better.

Przełęcz ocalonych (2016)

angielski In the hands of Mel Gibson, the already fascinating story of Desmond Doss is transformed into a one hundred percent impressive anti-war film, which from beginning to end flows very naturally and without a single hiccup, or even cliché, and literally does whatever it wants with the viewer. In the first half, we follow Desmond's determination to enlist and wish him well in spite of everything and everyone. In the second half, we experience an extremely suggestive war hell with him and we don't understand what can make a man willingly throw himself into it (by the way, whoever says that the first half is for women and the second for men must have a really simple life). All the actors are great, the direction is imaginative, the script is not a quickie and I really liked the music. However, the Czech subtitle of the film "Zrození hrdiny" (The Birth of a Hero) is misleading, because heroism, which has many forms, is not so much at stake here. It's about conviction, courage, and belief that good things won't stop happening even in the worst place on earth.

Kasaři (1958)

angielski "Please. Yesterday there were nine thousand five hundred and twenty crowns, thirty hellers. The thirty hellers are still there." If this film had been made in France with Gabin and Ventura in the lead roles, it would have been a classic crime comedy today. But it originated in our country, not many people know it, and that's a pity. At the same time, it is excellently cast (in addition to perhaps the heavenly trio of Pivec, Pešek, Hrušínský, I would like to highlight Eman Fiala in a beautiful small role) and written with ease, without any awkwardness that the time of creation would have required. Perhaps it's just that all the clues leading to the final revelation are thrown around in the story a bit too clumsily - but then again, this isn't the kind of film where the viewer minds being a step or two ahead.

Imie róży (1986)

angielski I remember almost nothing of the book, which I once read in high school and now understandably want to reread, and maybe that's for the best. I didn't have to compare what was different in the film and what didn't get into it, and I just watched it tensely and had fun for two hours. The film is an excellent medieval detective story with an overlap for a slightly more knowledgeable viewer, has a million-dollar atmosphere and a first-class cast with Sean Connery in the main super role.
