Norwegia, początek XX wieku. Pełna śniegu i przejmującego zimna, odizolowana od świata wyspa Bastoy, na której działa ośrodek poprawczy dla nastoletnich chłopców. Bastoy to istne piekło i obóz pracy, gdzie panuje sadystyczny reżim i nie obowiązuje żaden kodeks praw. Metody wychowawcze stosowane przez opiekunów polegają na psychicznej i fizycznej przemocy. W ramach resocjalizacji chłopcy zmuszani są także do wykonywania ciężkiej fizycznej pracy w nieludzkich warunkach. Na wyspę trafia niepokorny, zbuntowany 17-letni Erling (Benjamin Helstad), niesłusznie skazany za morderstwo. Od samego początku chłopak ma jeden cel – za wszelką cenę uciec stamtąd. Wkrótce zdaje sobie sprawę, że jego plan to… dokonać niemożliwego. W pojedynkę ma nikłe szanse, musi zjednać sobie innych współwięźniów. Musi stawić też opór dyrektorowi ośrodka (Stellan Skarsgard), który za wszelką cenę próbuje złamać chłopaka. Erling jednak nie poddaje się i wciąż opracowuje plan ucieczki. W końcu swoją postawą zaraża innych i dochodzi do zbiorowego buntu. Wszyscy stoczą walkę o wolność i godność, która zmieni ich życie na zawsze. (Alter Ego Pictures)

King of Devil's Island dives into a fascinating piece of Scandinavian history, a topic that’s always compelling. Set during the early days of World War I on the island of Bastøy, this Norwegian film—backed by a range of European sponsors—delivers a powerful story about a reform school gone wrong. The plot flows seamlessly, but what really holds everything together is Stellan Skarsgård's outstanding performance. He plays the head of the institution with such gravitas that his authority leaps off the screen and into your living room. The stunning Nordic landscape, paired with an evocative score, elevates the film to another level. It’s hard to imagine giving this film anything less than five stars—it truly earns it.

The film is set in 1915 on a deserted island in Norway, home to a reformatory for juvenile delinquents. The institute is run by the sadistic hand of Stellan Skarsgård, who gives an amazing performance. The Scandinavians at its best with its no-holds-barred atmosphere, excellent performances, a gritty to uncomfortable setting with plenty of tension and a ruthless ending. Very good. 80%

The Norwegian version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was really enjoyable except for a few weaker moments. Stellan Skarsgard was great as usual, and the creators provided a perfectly grim atmosphere. I just couldn’t empathize with any of the main characters. Sure, the caregivers shouldn't get intimate with their wards because it's unhygienic, but I do think that in our prisons, the guards should sometimes stand on an inmate's fingers instead of just changing games in their PS 4.
