V pasti (1956) (film telewizyjny)

angielski I liked it very much and I admit that I give the fifth star because of the ratings here. It's film noir and it is very sensational, though too short, it's quite bold and most importantly it's beautifully shot in a beautiful setting. Karel Höger plays the cautious politician perfectly, and Dana Medřická, who has perhaps never been more beautiful, is a femme fatale straight out of a magazine. Plus I have to mention the excellent music.

Konec agenta č. 312 (1974) (film telewizyjny)

angielski A pleasant Hašek work with the excellent Josef Kemr. Vladimír Menšík may not be a good match for Jaroslav Hašek, but he has the necessary skill and the film doesn't rely on him alone, so it definitely works. "If you'll allow, Councilman, all the traitors are punctually detained according to the list. Marketeer Maňáková, art photographer Netečka, cabby Macek and grinder Boubelík. The only one missing is the painter Vomáčka, the one who two years ago wrote to the Emperor that he had drawn up a plan for war against Japan. How our mountain hunters were supposed to occupy Tokyo within five days, if you care to remember." - "Okay, and what's wrong with him?" - "He's still in the madhouse at the moment, Councilman."

Sometimes a Great Notion (1971)

angielski A hilarious drama about stubborn lumberjacks who didn't budge an inch, who lost everything because of it, but their honor remained. Paul Newman is excellent both as an actor and director, Henry Fonda needs no elaboration, the pace of the film is slow, but the characters grow on the viewer thanks to it, and the ending is all the more heartbreaking.

Snajper (2014)

angielski A pleasantly unbiased, melancholic view of a man who was no great thinker, but who meant well. American Sniper does not glorify Chris Kyle, but rather makes him a sad victim of a cruel war and his own noble need to help others. I honestly admit that I was afraid that this would be the second Machine Gun Preacher, from which I was very sick the other day, but fortunately my fears were misplaced. Clint Eastwood also managed to keep most of the dangerous clichés lurking around the corner, and filmed the story with his usual coolly dispassionate naturalism. My only regret is that the film followed a template that I have seen many times before and that it is not a bit more exceptional in its treatment. But I didn't expect the ending (because I knew nothing about the real fate of the main character) and it really touched me.

Slepice a kostelník (1950)

angielski The film makers may have fulfilled the plan at 114.5 per cent, but the film itself fulfilled it at 50 percent. Vlasta Burian, whatever one may say about his involvement ("probably the most shameful film," says the distributor), is the main reason to see The Hen and the Sexton. From an ordinary and really "as a punishment" role of a ridiculous mischief maker, he managed to bring quite a generous dose of humor and it is appreciated. It would also be hypocritical not to admit that the entire film, though poorly written, is at least skillfully shot. Otherwise, of course, it is an agitprop with all the trimmings, including large portraits of Gottwald and Stalin, part-time work, the construction of a water pipeline and a final toast to the ploughing of the frontier.

M jak morderstwo (1954)

angielski A very entertaining thriller - cracks and fissures begin to appear in the perfect murder plan, and the main negative character (as strange as it sounds, Tony Wendice, played by Ray Milland, is just that) patches up as many of them as he can with as much effort and nonchalance as he can. Hitchcock obviously enjoyed it and that's why we enjoy it, too, and Grace Kelly is just so beautiful...

Idiotka (1977) (film telewizyjny)

angielski It's more of a crime drama with comedic elements, but it's light, with great performances and the right amount of warm humanity that such productions should have. Jiřina Bohdalová is of course perfect in the role of a simple woman accused of murder, but like her, I liked the aristocrat Květa Fialová and the hesitant judge Petr Kostka. If I had to compare Idiotka to some more well-known works, from the classics it would be Inherit the Wind, and from contemporary films Bridge of Spies. Seriously.

Czarownica: Bajka ludowa z Nowej Anglii (2015)

angielski When the movie is over and I feel like seeing it again as soon as possible, that's a good thing. What does it matter that the film has an almost unbearably oppressive atmosphere, the fanatical people are portrayed so mercilessly and without turning a blind eye that perhaps only our own Witchhammer has managed to do so far, and that you almost hate to watch it all because it is so full of hopelessness. The Witch is just so engaging that, despite all the horrors, I wondered what would happen next, and I kept hoping that at least some of the characters would come to their senses. The ending, unlike many other users, didn't ruin the experience for me, although I thought for a long time about whether it was a good thing that it was so literal or not. Truth be told, after the intense harrowing experience of the previous eighty minutes, it was enough for me that there was an ending.

Torn Curtain (1966)

angielski I have a soft spot for Cold War spy stories, and I have to rank this one among the best. Torn Curtain has the momentum of North by Northwest from start to finish, though, admittedly, it's not quite as majestic. The scenes on the farm, on the bus and in the theatre are particularly excellent. Paul Newman ultimately plays it entirely his own way, though it initially looks like he's going to (or should) do a James Stewart impression, and Julie Andrews keeps up with him. It's a shame that Hitchcock got into a fight with Bernard Herrmann, because his music, judging by the DVD preview, would have been better than John Addison's.

Děvčata, nedejte se! (1937)

angielski A film that has a script so suspiciously flimsy and hastily cobbled together that practically anything could happen in it, from a volcanic eruption to an alien invasion, and I probably wouldn't find it strange. On the contrary, it would probably make Girls, Stand Fast! a little more interesting. However, Hugo Haas is traditionally good - this distracted position has always suited him perfectly.
